Vivek Murthy, the 19th Surgeon General of the United States, will be replaced only two years after being appointed by former president Barack Obama. It was announced on Friday that Vivek Murthy would be leaving his role as Surgeon General after being asked to resign from the position by the Trump administration. A spokeswomen for the Department of Health and Human Services told The Associated Press that Murthy was asked to resign after assisting the new administration with a “smooth transition.”[i] Murthy, who during his tenure as Surgeon General champed the fight against the opioid epidemic and prescription drug abuse is being replaced by Rear Adm. Sylvia Trent-Adams. Rear Adm. Sylvia Trent-Adams assumed her role immediately following Murthy resignation, had previously served under Murthy as deputy surgeon general. Trent-Adams brings with her 24-years of service with the US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. In her time with the Corps, she had served in a number of capacities with the Department of Health and Human Services, and has history of working specifically with poor and underserved communities. Prior to working with the Surgeon General’s Office she was the associate administrator for the HIV/AIDS Bureau (HAB) a division of the DHHS Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). As part of her work to combat the spread of HIV/AIDS she assisted in the management of funds related to the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment Extension Act of 2009 (Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program).
